From Tree, to Timbers, to Fine Furniture

Have a seat and I’ll tell you a story.

Have A Seat

Have A Seat Walnut Bench By Greg Wood

A customer of mine had a tree which needed to be removed from their yard.  It was a Walnut tree, approximately 24 inches in diameter.  The tree was cut down, sawed in to 2.5 inch thick timber slabs, and then air-dried for three years until the moisture level was below ten percent.

The customer called me, with ideas of some furniture they would like to have built from their lumber.  They wanted a bench, two end tables, a desk and a head-board.

I drew up design plans to represent the client’s personal tastes and desires while simultaneously planning how to best utilize the slabs .  After the plans were finalized, I use chalk to layout the lumber with respect to the grain figure.

And viola, two end tables built from a tree in the yard,

and a bench with contour shaped back.

Now on to the desk and head-board.  From tree to timbers to fine furniture.

Eco Friendly Furniture

Moving to a farm in the country changes one in many ways that you could never imagine.  For us, suddenly we were so busy with every day life there were barely enough hours in the day;  mowing, snow plowing, running errands, buying groceries  — or gardening — and then there’s cutting and splitting firewood.  The many hours spent felling trees and cutting wood has changed Greg’s furniture building business in to new directions.

This natural edge bench was built from a single plank board with zero waste.

Greg has taken on a more organic and more  eco-friendly approach to building wood furniture and securing lumber.

His furniture business has taken on a more efficient use of lumber as there is virtually zero waste.  And at the same time his organic style has taken on a more interesting design as it embellishes the look of the wood by including the sapwood which contrasts with the heartwood.
